June 23, Sunday – North Log Cabin Work Day, 1:00 – 5:00 PM at Myers Park.

DATES & EVENTS :

June 20, Thursday, is the transition board meeting of current and incoming officers. This is to assist the incoming officers better understand their responsibilities from the outgoing officers. The meeting will be held at the Rose restaurant, Triphammer Mall at 5:00 PM.

June 25 is Pass the Gavel day.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: A Rotarian lady who would pick up trash inspired her club members to spend 100 minutes on April 20, Earth Day, picking up trash and planting flowers.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: Three new cases of polio were reported in Somalia. These are the first cases there since 1977. Since there are millions of people in Somalia who have not been vaccinated a serious problem now exists. From Somalia polio could easily spread to nearby countries. Because of the political and unsafe climate in that part of Africa, vaccinating people will be difficult.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: Rotary International received an award for its structure of the Future Vision Plan model. The award selection committee (non-Rotarians) use an award selection criteria based on one established by Thomas Edison.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: Since Rotary and other organization began their attack on polio, the number of polio cases has gone from 330k in 25 countries to now it is 18 cases in 3 countries. .

OPENING: Pres. Vickey opened the meeting with the pledge, followed by the 4-Way Test. Vickey selected the song, “My Country Tis of Thee.” The Thought-for-the Day was moment of silence for the people who died and were injured at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: 12 Rotarians from around the country were honored at the White House by president Obama for the contributions they had made to provide help for people around the world and in this country. As one person we feel powerless to make a difference, but together a lot can be done.

INTRODUCTIONS: Being Visitors’ Day there were many introductions to be made. Rotarians; PDG Gene Erickson, Asst. DG Janet Steiner, Doug Armstrong: Speaker; Andrea Benson: Visitors; Marge Brodhead, Martha Mapes, Carol Dornbush, Judy Jacobj, Ben Muggeo, Keith Thompson.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: Rotary continues advocating for national governments to support the campaign to wipe out polio. Rotatarians worldwide have raised over $1B for Polio Plus. Canadian Rotarians raised $2.2M through its Pennies and More for Polio Campaign. The United Kingdom Rotarians raised $40K by selling purple fabric crocus boutonnieres. Germany Rotarians launched a commemorative postal stamp with proceeds going to purchase Polio vaccine. London, England, Rotarians raised money by auctioning artwork. Rotarians from Ontario, CA, and Michigan raised money by holding two marathons. A Middle school in Missouri raised $1,375 with a Pennies for Polio campaign.

FOUNDATION MOMENT: Most diseases could be eliminated with clean water and hygiene. This is what one Rotary club has helped provide in a small town by adding fluoride to the drinking water and providing hygiene training.
